Goucher College
Baltimore, Maryland, United States
Matt Van Hoose, Ph.D., serves as Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Associate Vice President for Global, Career, and Community-Based Learning at Goucher College, where he oversees a range of domestic and international partnership and experiential learning activities. In this role, Matt oversees Goucher’s nationally recognized study abroad program, through which all Goucher undergraduate students complete a substantive international experience as part of their degree programs. He also oversees the college’s Career Education Office and its efforts to deliver the Goucher Internship Accelerator, a scaffolded, four-year sequence of work-based learning experiences that aim to equitably support all students’ career readiness. During his tenure at Goucher, Matt has also developed and taught an undergraduate course on the ethnography of work and led the development of a university retirement community with Edenwald Senior Living, which borders Goucher’s campus.
Prior to his tenure at Goucher, Matt served from 2016 to 2022 as Executive Director of Academic Engagement and Senior International Officer at Howard Community College (HCC) in Columbia, Maryland. During that time, his area’s accomplishments included the expansion of undergraduate research opportunities and the development of a three-year faculty development project with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, which led to the integration of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) into general education courses reaching hundreds of students each year. At HCC, and also at the Indiana University Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, where Matt served as Associate Director from 2008 to 2013, he collaborated with career services offices on numerous initiatives to enhance the student experience.
Matt serves currently on the Baltimore County Workforce Development Board and the World Trade Center Institute’s CEO Council, where he engages with corporate leaders to better align Goucher College and the higher education sector more broadly with regional economic and workforce needs.
