In his role directing Mindset by Symplicity Bill leads research, insights, and consulting projects focused on holistic learning experiences, while looking for data that has value for our students and campuses. Trained in student development, experiential and organizational learning, and higher education assessment, Bill is passionate about emergent outcomes of deep learning experiences. Bill's current research on campus Experiential Learning Ecosystems drives campus decisions as we come to fully understand our role in the transformative process that is learning from experience.
Bill’s career spans on-campus, regional and international capacity development, and ed-tech consulting. He is focused on experiential learning, assessment, the mindsets of leaders, program evaluation, teaching, and learning, human centered design, and student learning. Bill was most recently the Head of Assessment and Experiential Learning at Michigan State University’s Hub for Innovation in Learning and Technology. Prior to the Hub, Bill worked in learning research roles at MSU, in student affairs at UC Santa Cruz, and as a guide and outdoor educator in California and Vermont. Fueled by the pragmatism of a good theory, Bill loves to connect big ideas to repeatable educational practices. Bill’s monitoring and evaluation work has supported various university programs, community-based non-profit organizations focused on preventing childhood abuse, a (US) National Science Foundation grant, and several USAID funded human centered design training projects in Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa.
Bill Holds a BA in Psychology from Northern Illinois University, a MA in Student Affairs Administration from MSU, and a PhD in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education from Michigan State University. Bill rides a bike to work year-round and enjoys spending time with his partner and two kiddos exploring the world.
