Every year, talented noncitizen students graduate from U.S. institutions looking to apply their skills in high-need sectors, including STEM, healthcare, and education among other fields. However, career service offices are not always prepared to support these students to pursue the employment-based immigration options that may be available to them. Similarly, employers are not always confident on the steps to take for employment-based sponsorship. In this session, attendees will learn how career offices, employers, and students can utilize resources from the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education & Immigration, including the Legal Pathways that Work initiative and the Higher Ed Immigration Portal, to more holistically support the career journeys of international and noncitizen students. Speakers will discuss the immigration policy hurdles that noncitizen students in temporary or precarious immigration statuses face pursuing postgraduate employment and provide an overview of the Legal Pathways that Work initiative, including its online Hub. The Initiative offers a suite of resources, trainings, and other tools for employers, students and campuses to support access to employment-based visas and careers in the U.S. post graduation for noncitizen students and graduates, including international students and Dreamers.
